Dear [subscriber:firstname | default:reader],

It's been wonderful to get back into the studio, feeling refreshed and renewed. Composer Annie Mahtani and I have been working on the music for Fantasia, and it was thrilling to listen to such beautiful music while driving through the sunshine during my holiday in France!

We've settled on a score that has a backbone of Vivaldi - from early Vivaldi to later works, and includes baroque music by JS Bach, Purcell, Telemann, with a scattering of Beethoven, Vaughan Williams and Kurtág. Now we're back in the studio and the emotion and the dance has been flowing - I am really excited about Fantasia - it will be a treat for the eyes and the soul.

Read on for news of week one in rehearsals for Rosie Kay’s Fantasia and a tour update, my most recent Future-Proof Artist podcast talking with Adam Curtis and Simon Preston and details of my Birmingham Pro Classes at DanceXchange, Birmingham in September.

With best wishes,

BIRMINGHAM PRO CLASS - WITH ROSIE KAY

This September, Rosie will lead three classes as part of the Birmingham Pro Class programme on Tuesdays 3rd, 10th and 17th September from 10:00 - 11:30.

These contemporary ballet classes are suitable for dancers who have completed, or are in their final year of full-time professional dance training.

Birmingham Pro Class is a non-profit making collective initiative by dance artists, companies and organisations in the city that responds to the ambition of the city's dance sector to have a consistent bi-weekly offer of high-quality classes in a variety of styles, for dance artists and professional practitioners. Rosie Kay Dance Company is delighted to support this initiative.

Access to the Pro Classes is by membership only, with members enjoying discounted access to professional classes and priority booking for special events. Membership fees go directly into funding the programme.

The classes will take place from 10:00 - 11:30 on Tuesdays 3rd, 10th and 17th September at DanceXchange.

ROSIE KAY'S FANTASIA

It's so wonderful to get back into the studio after a bit of break, and work with three experienced dancers, all of whom I've been lucky enough to work with before and whose work I value greatly.

I spent one day alone with each of the Fantasia dancers; Carina Howard, Harriet Ellis and Shanelle Clemenson. Working with each dancer individually first for a group work is a first for me, but it makes a lot of sense; I got to see their own emotional responses to music, and understand a little bit more about how they listen to the music, and how they interpret music through their unique dancing styles and cognitive interpretations.

Spending time with each dancer also helped me bond with them again in the studio, and explain the concept of the work to them, and get their feedback and views on ideas around female representation. Putting them together is going to be so powerful- each is a soloist in their own rights, but together they will be electric!

I also had an exhausting day by myself in the studio - inspired by their ways of moving I tried to get under the skin of the whole piece. The more precise I can be, the more I can offer and ask of the dancers.

THE FUTURE-PROOF ARTIST

In Episode 3 of the Future-Proof Artist podcast series, Simon Preston talks to Rosie Kay and Adam Curtis, BBC journalist and BAFTA-winning filmmaker about the origins of their fascinating partnership and how conspiracy theories fuelled the collaborative creation of MK ULTRA.

Kay and Curtis express their views on why conspiracy theories are so tenacious in the modern world, how the art world can sometimes be found guilty of retreating from radicalism and how Kay makes these views and ideas dance. Adam concludes "Both journalism and art would probably be a bit better if artists embraced a different way of looking at the world which is that you really can’t tell what’s going to happen tomorrow and we should embrace uncertainty.”
