Dear [subscriber:firstname | default:reader],

We're just back from our first tour visit to Denmark where audiences loved 5 SOLDIERS - we even got our first ever six star review! Pictured above are the company during a post-show talk with venue director extraordinaire Ib Jensen of Baltoppen Live - thank you Ib for taking us on our first Danish adventure!

Our main news that we're super excited to share with you this month is an opportunity to dance with us to celebrate the premiere of 10 SOLDIERS and Birmingham Hippodrome's 120th Anniversary year. We are looking for 120 people to take part in a free workshop and perform to the public, so read on for the full details and share the information with your friends!

We also have the final dates of 5 SOLDIERS on tour (Cardiff, Somerset and San Francisco), new large-scale performances lined up for Edinburgh and Norwich, 'The Artist as Entrepreneur' discussion event at Opus Restaurant, and livestreaming from the studio on #DancePassion day with BBC Arts. Read on to find out more.
Choreographer and Artistic Director
Rosie Kay

Your chance to perform with us at Birmingham Hippodrome!

We are looking for 120 people to join us for a mass pop-up performance at the Hippodrome ahead of our premiere of 10 SOLDIERS. This follows in Rosie Kay’s initiative to choreograph huge works that engage with the community and get everyone dancing.

Last year, Rosie choreographed the Commonwealth Games Handover performance with 600 local young people plus choreographed the 100-strong community cast for Woyzeck at The REP.

To get involved in this exciting opportunity you will need to commit to:
  • The rehearsal day, 10:00-16:00 on Sunday 19 May 2019 at Birmingham Hippodrome
  • The performance day, 17:00-21:00 on Tuesday 21 May 2019 at Birmingham Hippodrome
In return you will receive:
  • A day of free dance workshops and tuition with Rosie Kay and dancers from 10 SOLDIERS
  • A free ticket to see 10 SOLDIERS on Tuesday 21 May at 19:30
  • A free 10 SOLDIERS t-shirt to perform in and keep
No dance experience is required, just energy and enthusiasm to be involved. We welcome all participants aged 16 or over regardless of their background or abilities.

Help us to share this opportunity by passing the invite to your friends and family!

Deadline to apply: Friday 29 March 2019
We will contact everyone who has applied by 12 April 2019.

The artist as entrepreneur

On Monday 29 April, Opus Restaurants are hosting ‘The artist as entrepreneur’, featuring Rosie Kay in conversation with Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Birmingham Hippodrome, Fiona Allan.

The discussion will focus on setting up your own dance company, financing your creative practice, insights to Rosie’s process, and the creation of 10 SOLDIERS, Rosie Kay Dance Company’s first large-scale production to be commissioned by Birmingham Hippodrome.

You are welcome to join us from 5pm from when there will be drinks served in the bar. The conversation will begin at 5.30pm and finish at 6.45pm.

When: Monday 29 April at 5.30pm
Where: Opus Restaurant, 54 Cornwall Street, Birmingham B3 2DE
BBC stories
Last month, our new cast member Trooper Alex Smith of the Queen's Dragoon Guards featured in BBC Stories. Discussing how 5 SOLDIERS and 10 SOLDIERS challenge stereotypes about what dance can be and who it is for, Alex reflects on the parallels between dancers’ and soldiers’ training as well as the ambition and discipline needed for both.

#Dancepassion livestreaming on BBC Arts

On Friday 5 April, we will be taking part in an 11-hour livestreaming event with BBC Arts as part of #dancepassion, a week-long dance festival celebrating the UK’s dance scene in collaboration with One Dance UK. A major theme for the festival is the science of dance and how it is being used to enhance performances for audiences.

Rosie Kay Dance Company will feature alongside Birmingham Royal Ballet - who will be showing how 3D motion tracking is pushing choreography to the next level – as well as Viviana Durante Company, Akram Khan Company, National Dance Company Wales, Company Wayne McGregor and New Adventures.

You will be able to watch the live stream via a new BBC service called Silver.

10S cast
Ten years on from Rosie Kay's groundbreaking attachment as a choreographer and dancer researching in The Army, we expand the work for the large stage with 10 SOLDIERS. Commissioned by Birmingham Hippodrome, 10 SOLDIERS looks at life in 2019’s British Army including issues of equality and diversity. Charged with Kay’s trademark intense athletic dance theatre, 10 SOLDIERS explores how the human body – with both fragility and incredible inner strength – remains on the frontline of war.

Announcing today, the full cast:
Harriet Ellis, Luke Bradshaw, Josh Hutchby, Trooper Alex Smith, Alan Hunte, Jonathan Mewett, Emma Houston, Kevin Memeti, Olly Bell, James Rosental, and Akshay Sharma

Premiering on 21 May at Birmingham Hippodrome, followed by a performance on 30 May at Edinburgh Festival Theatre and 4 June at Norwich Theatre Royal.
