WATCH: a week of dance on BBC

Tune into BBC Arts social media channels tomorrow for a full day of livestreamed dance as part of their #dancepassion week in collaboration with One Dance UK.

At 4.15pm, we’ll be performing sections of 5 SOLDIERS as choreographer Rosie Kay talks about her creative process and how she has approached telling the stories of frontline soldiers through dance. New cast member Trooper Alex Smith, 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards will also talk about his experience performing in the show. Alex is a serving soldier who trained at Northern Ballet and brings a new layer of authenticity to Kay’s highly researched choreography. He will also be dancing with us in the larger piece 10 SOLDIERS which premieres in May.

Visit bbc.co.uk/dance for full details and schedule.

LISTEN: The Sound of Dance

On Saturday afternoon (6 April) at 3pm, we will feature on BBC Radio 3's The Sound of Dance as Rosie Kay discusses the music of 10 SOLDIERS with long-term Rosie Kay Dance Company collaborator and composer, Dr Annie Mahtani.

Annie is Lecturer in Electroacoustic Composition at the University of Birmingham and co-director of SOUNDkitchen, a platform for local artists to present their work alongside that of international composers and sound artists.

If you can't tune in on Saturday, the programme will be available online for thirty days and following that in podcast form, so add it to your 'Must Listen' list!

New work: Fantasia

Fantasia": a composition that breaks all the rules

We are extremely excited to announce our newest work, Fantasia, a piece that takes ballet and tutus into the 21st Century using dance and science to create an exquisite performance of pleasure, beauty and finesse. Fine-tuning choreography with neurological research, we are questioning what it is that makes dance beautiful to watch and experience.

Fantasia will be performed by three bold female dancers to a luscious soundtrack of Vivaldi, Purcell, Beethoven and Bach as they discover love, loss, emotion and joy.

Join us for the premiere on 25 & 25 September at Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday 29 April, 11am

10 SOLDIERS premieres next month

plus open dance classes for professionals

As a decade long project that has pioneered creating dance about soldiers' lives, we are expanding 5 SOLDIERS into 10 SOLDIERS, a new large-scale work commissioned by Birmingham Hippodrome.

The new piece looks at life in 2019’s British Army and uses the bigger cast to dig more deeply including issues of equality and diversity, also looking at the different roles women play in the Armed Forces and their relationships with each other.

During rehearsals, we will be running free professional level company classes on Tuesdays 30 Apr, 7 May and 14 May from 10:00-11:15 at DanceXchange. These classes are suitable for dancers who have completed full time professional dance training. No need to book, just turn up.

10 SOLDIERS premieres on 21 May at Birmingham Hippodrome, followed by a performance on 30 May at Edinburgh Festival Theatre and 4 June at Norwich Theatre Royal.
Version 2

California dreaming

Very shortly we will be taking 5 SOLDIERS all the way to San Francisco! From 11-13 April, we will be showcasing the piece as part of SF Performances current season. Inspired by the lives and experiences of frontline soldiers, and applauded for its authenticity, we will be performing on four occasions at Atrium Theatre in the War Memorial Veterans Building.

If you know anyone in the Bay Area, let them know.

For one month only...

Until the end of April, we will be offering new members of the Rosie Kay Fan Club a free t-shirt documenting 2019's tour of 5 SOLDIERS.

It is the first year we have branched out to San Francisco and Denmark, taking our critically acclaimed dance made in Birmingham to an international audience.
